OVERVIEW

We treat all our clients with the same high level of care and dedication. However, when installing a system that will save lives for the NHS, there is a heightened level of awareness of what could happen if our work is delayed. Our speed of response and the exceptionally high quality of our teams are two reasons why we work successfully with various NHS organisations.

In 2021, we were contracted to upgrade the medical gas system for ESNEFT (East Suffolk and North Essex NHS Foundation Trust). The work was completed at both their Colchester site (a 763-bed hospital) and their Ipswich site (a 552-bed hospital)

Project

The project included all design and build work to enable the oxygen medical gas pipe system to be upgraded. Undertaking a project in a fully operational clinical building introduces challenges and risks to be managed.

Diamond drilling through floors, removal of the existing system and general building work all had to be managed to be noise sensitive. Communication with the hospital team and strong working relationships to build trust were vital. We respected that certain areas could not be accessed at specific times due to visitors or patient rest times. Clinical needs were prioritised and our workflow had to be flexible: we reacted on a daily basis to changes in areas we could access or times we could complete more noisy work.

Any system shut down had to be agreed with the clinical team, and we needed to be prepared to change those shutdowns with minimum notice prioritising clinical needs and the patients.

Our team worked seven days a week with long hours to accommodate the needs of working in operational clinical space. The hospital is also classified as a “public building meaning we had staff, patients and public safety to manage. Safety levels were paramount with a watchman used when working off podiums. Fire watch took place after work completed and of course, all permits, including hot works permits, were in place.

Result

Our flexible approach, and ability to change our working patterns to suit the client environment, meant that we installed the main pipework in record time, ensuring the integrity of the system. The communication skills and approach to the work by our team on site is first-class, enabling us to develop fantastic relationships with our clients.
